Friday, August 1, Bike to the Beach for Autism

I am writing because I run a non-profit called Bike to the Beach. We are a biking organization that promotes biking as a legitimate way of travel, staying in-shape, and networking. We also host an annual fundraising bike ride, a 120-mile bike ride from Washington DC to Bethany Beach, DE to raise money for Autism Research.
We have over 80 members (4 Brown Graduates), who are mostly 20 and 30 somethings interested in biking, networking, and just having fun. I would really like Bike to the Beach to Partner with the Brown Club of DC. I think the Club's members would be very interested participating in Bike to the Beach and our cause, Autism.
This year's ride will begin on Friday, August 1, 2008, and will take my fellow-riders and I from the nation's capital to Annapolis, MD, across the Chesapeake Bay, and ending with a grueling 100-mile trek to the Atlantic. We have partnered with Autism Speaks and our goal is to raise awareness and $100,000 to help those whose lives are touched by Autism, a neurological disorder that affects 1 out of every 150 children. Monday, August 11: Superman at Screen on Green

Please join Beatrice Camino and fellow Brown alumni for a non happy hour social gathering at "Screen on the Green" on the National Mall. Bring a blanket to the National Mall (National Mall between 4th & 7th Streets) and snacks to share; we will be watching a classic film on a gigantic movie screen. Superman will be shown beginning at dusk, around 8:30-9:00 pm. I will get there around 7:30 to claim a spot for us. Look for the Brown banner or a Brown golf umbrella. Brown Professor Jennifer Lawless will join the Brown Club of DC to discuss the 2008 presidential election landmark race. The winner will shape U.S. foreign and domestic policy for generations, appoint at least one Supreme Court justice (probably two), and face challenges like the housing crisis, health care reform, Social Security solvency, and the war in Iraq. But the road to the White House has been no easy path this year. The Democrats struggled when they faced an historic choice for their nominee. The Republicans faced an internal struggle between social conservatives and fiscal moderates. As a result, the primary season contributed baggage to each party’s nominee, leaving Independents and even some partisans less than enthusiastic with both Barack Obama and John McCain. So, what happened over the course of the last 16 months? What role did the media play in shaping the current landscape for the 2008 election? What can we expect over the course of the next 30 days? And how will the next president navigate the challenges associated with taking office following the lowest approval ratings any U.S. president has ever seen? Jennifer Lawless will examine the dynamics of the 2008 election, highlighting the good, the bad, and the ugly, and she will assess the prospects for victory and governing for each candidate.

Calling for a Dedicated Volunteer: The Brown Club of DC is looking for an Events Coordinator to focus on “Ivy Singles” programming. Ivy Singles is a coalition of regional alumni associations that sponsor social activities. (More information is at http://www.ivysinglesdc.com.) The volunteer will participate in both Brown Club and Ivy Singles planning meetings. Other responsibilities include: coordinating an annual event (usually a cocktail/happy hours); helping at events run by other clubs; ensuring publication of Ivy Singles announcements on website and in e-mail updates; and attending Ivy Singles quarterly board meetings.
